E1: Facilities and Services Available 

Visually impaired students have additional support when pursuing their tertiary education locally. Below gives an overview of the services provided by two major institutions – The University of the West Indies (UWI) and The University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT). 

University of the West Indies (UWI) 

  • Student Life and Development Department (SLDD) o Assists students with disabilities by providing: 
  • Laptops & USB drives (for examination purposes) 
  • Digital Recorders 
  • Special Software (available at the ground floor at the Main Library) 
  • Students with disabilities must register with SLDD and complete service agreements each semester. Staff at SLDD will then verify the existence of a disability based on the documentation provided. These aids are provided to students based on their needs and are given under certain terms for a specific period of time. 

> Special Accommodation for Exams 

  • A separate Room 
  • Extra Time 
  • Special Equipment such as a Laptop 
  • Exam scripts in extra-large font 
  • These accommodations are then approved by the Examinations Committee. ASDLU will then advise the respective faculty of all approved test taking accommodation and any alternative testing format required.

University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) 

Student Development Unit – Disability Access Services 

  • Student Disability Services (SDS) and Student Counseling Services (SCS) 
  • Provide students with the support and resources to resolve problems arising from a disability. Any request for an accommodation will be considered and evaluated based upon need, international best practices and the institution’s resource capacity. 
  • Some commonly requested accommodations for students include:

  • Examination Accommodations

  • Services for Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Students
