Visually impaired students have additional support when pursuing their tertiary education locally. Below gives an overview of the services provided by two major institutions – The University of the West Indies (UWI) and The University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT).
University of the West Indies (UWI)
- Student Life and Development Department (SLDD) o Assists students with disabilities by providing:
- Laptops & USB drives (for examination purposes)
- Digital Recorders
- Special Software (available at the ground floor at the Main Library)
- Students with disabilities must register with SLDD and complete service agreements each semester. Staff at SLDD will then verify the existence of a disability based on the documentation provided. These aids are provided to students based on their needs and are given under certain terms for a specific period of time.

- Extra Time
- Special Equipment such as a Laptop
- Exam scripts in extra-large font
- These accommodations are then approved by the Examinations Committee. ASDLU will then advise the respective faculty of all approved test taking accommodation and any alternative testing format required.
